ICYMI: Johnson Receives NRA Endorsement

Posted September 28, 2010

Good afternoon,

In case you missed it: Today, Manufacturer and U.S. Senate Candidate Ron Johnson received the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund endorsement. Upon receiving the endorsement, Johnson said “The National Rifle Association has a long and distinguished record of defending our Second Amendment rights, and I am proud to accept this endorsement for that reason. I will go to Washington to protect our constitutionally guaranteed rights and freedoms and will be a staunch defender of the Second Amendment.”

NRA-PVF Endorses Ron Johnson for U.S. Senate in Wisconsin

Fairfax, Va. – The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) is endorsing Ron Johnson for election to the U.S. Senate in Wisconsin this November.

“We can count on Ron Johnson to defend the Second Amendment freedoms of Wisconsin’s law-abiding gun owners, hunters and sportsmen,” said Chris W. Cox, chairman of NRA-PVF.

Ron Johnson’s commitment to preserving the Second Amendment has earned him an “AQ” rating and endorsement from the NRA-PVF.

Johnson supports national right-to-carry reciprocity and efforts to reform the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. He also opposes reenacting the Clinton gun and magazine ban and believes sportsmen should have access to federally owned or administered lands for hunting, fishing, trapping and recreational shooting. Johnson has also vowed to vote against anti-gun Supreme Court nominees.

“Ron Johnson will be a strong voice in fighting ongoing efforts by anti-gun politicians to dismantle the Second Amendment,” Cox concluded. “We ask all Wisconsin gun-owners and hunters to vote Ron Johnson for U.S. Senate on November 2nd.”

Chris W. Cox is NRA’s chief lobbyist. He also serves as chairman of NRA-PVF. The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund is responsible for political candidate rankings. These are based on candidate voting records, public statements and responses to NRA-PVF questionnaires.

Johnson Campaign Launches New TV And Radio Ads

Posted September 28, 2010

[Oshkosh, WI] Oshkosh manufacturer and U.S. Senate Candidate Ron Johnson’s campaign launched a new television ad titled “Listening,” and a radio ad “Not This Time.”  The ads, which will run on television and radio statewide, focus on the Democrats’ health care legislation and Senator Feingold’s deciding vote in favor of the legislation.

“When a majority of Wisconsinites opposed the Democrats’ health care bill and asked Senator Feingold to oppose it, he refused to listen and instead toed the party line to cast the deciding vote,” Ron Johnson for Senate Campaign Manager Juston Johnson said.  “As a result of Senator Feingold’s vote, our nation is now faced with higher taxes, rising debt and increased premiums.  Perhaps Senator Feingold will finally hear voters when they go to the polls this November.”

Higher taxes. An Excise Tax Is Imposed on Most Employment-based Insurance Policies. “The legislation would impose an excise tax on employment-based policies whose total premiums (including the amounts paid by both the employer and the employee) exceeded a specified threshold.” (Source, Douglas W. Elmendorf, “Letter to the Honorable Evan Bayh,” Congressional Budget Office, http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/107xx/doc10781/11-30-Premiums.pdf, November 30, 2009)

In order to pay for the provisions of the health care bill, Congress increased the tax on dividends from 15 percent to 39.6 percent. “The top tax rates on qualified dividends are scheduled to jump from 15 percent to 39.6 percent on January 1, 2011.” (Source, Conn Carroll, “Morning Bell: The Obamacare and Obama Tax Hike Double Whammy on Seniors,”http://blog.heritage.org/2010/09/15/morning-bell-the-obamacare-and-obama-tax-hike-double-whammy-on-seniors/, The Heritage Foundation, September 15, 2010)

Higher insurance rates. The Congressional Budget Office Sees Insurance Premiums Will Increase 27 to 30 Percent. “Average premiums would be 27 to 30 percent higher because a greater amount of coverage would be obtained.” (Source, Douglas W. Elmendorf, “Letter to the Honorable Evan Bayh,” Congressional Budget Office, http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/107xx/doc10781/11-30-Premiums.pdf, November 30, 2009)

Health Insurers Blame 1 to 9 Percent of Rate Increases on the Health Care Bill. “In Wisconsin and North Carolina, Celtic Insurance Co. says half of the 18% increase it is seeking comes from complying with health-law mandates.” (Source, Janet Adamy, “Health Insurers Plan Hikes,” Wall Street Journal, September 8, 2010)

An Analysis from the Medicare Actuary’s Office Sees the Health Care Bill Will Increase Health Care Spending by 2020. “The nation’s health care tab will go up — not down — as a result of President Barack Obama’s sweeping overhaul.” (Source, Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, “Government: Spending to Rise Under Health Care Overhaul,” Associated Press, September 9, 2010)

“You can’t expand coverage by 32 million Americans and figure that will hold costs down.  The Democrats sold health care to Americans with a lot of fuzzy accounting and shaky assertions about how relatively inexpensive all this would be,” (Source, Editorial, “Lower Costs?  Forget it,” Chicago Tribune, September 24, 2010)

Lower quality. Obamacare Will Create New Government Bureaucracies Which Will Reduce Consumer Freedom, Choice, and Quality.  “The Administration will create mountains of regulations that will govern these activities. Health care will be politicized and made more cumbersome. The flexibility of providers and patients will be greatly reduced and creativity sup pressed. Individual choice will be subordinated to decisions made by central authority. The regulations issued by the government will be grist for private litigation against providers and insurers. PPACA sets in motion dynamics that will increase the cost of health care, reduce its flexibility, and ultimately prove anathema to the kind of health care that Americans want.”  (Source, John S. Hoff, “Implementing Obamacare: A New Exercise in Old-Fashioned Central Planning,” http://www.heritage.org/Research/Reports/2010/09/Implementing-Obamacare-A-New-Exercise-in-Old-Fashioned-Central-Planning, The Heritage Foundation, September 10, 2010)

MassCare, the Prototype of Obamacare, Has Increased Wait Times for Specialists. “Boston, a city in a state that recently expanded access to healthcare coverage, shows the longest average times to schedule an appointment. These long wait times serve as a sign of what could occur nationally if access to healthcare is made more generally available through healthcare reform.”  (Source, Merritt Hawkins & Associates, “2009 Survey of Physicians Appointment Wait Times,http://www.merritthawkins.com/pdf/mha2009waittimesurvey.pdf, 2009)

The Health Care Bill will force Millions of low-income Americans into Medicaid, a program many doctors do not openly participate in. “Millions will be dumped into Medicaid, reducing consumer choices, reducing competition for consumer dollars and lowering quality. “In order to cover low-income uninsured citizens, Obamacare expands eligibility for Medicaid to include all Americans that fall under 133 percent of the federal poverty level. However, Medicaid is a low-performing, low-quality federal program that fails to meet the needs of its beneficiaries. For example, Medicaid’s failure to cover the cost to providers of seeing Medicaid patients has greatly reduced the number of doctors who will see Medicaid patients.”  (Source, Kathryn Nix, “Obamacare: Impact on the Uninsured,”http://www.heritage.org/Research/Reports/2010/04/ObamaCare-Impact-on-the-Uninsured, The Heritage Foundation, April 20, 2010)

Doctors at the Cleveland Clinic Believe the Health Care Bill Will Certainly Effect Quality of Patient Care. “Starting on Oct. 1, 2012, Medicare payments for hospitals with high readmission rates for certain conditions, including heart failure, will be reduced.  This means Obamacare may actually punish hospitals and physicians for providing better quality care.  As Dr. Eiran Z. Gorodeski of the Cleveland Clinic put it, ‘I think that the message to patients and the general public is that they should be wary of seemingly simple measures of quality of care.’” (Source, Kathryn Nix, “Side Effects: Obamacare Could Punish Docs for Better Quality Care,http://blog.heritage.org/2010/07/16/side-effects-obamacare-could-punish-docs-for-better-quality-care/, The Heritage Foundation, July 16, 2010)

Senators Coburn (OK) and Barrasso (WY) – The Only Medical Doctors in the Senate – Issued a “100-Day Out” Report on Obamacare And Its Impact. “Nearly half of physicians in the same poll said government health programs, including Medicaid, are ineffective or very ineffective at responding to the individual needs of patients and empowering physicians and providers to provide quality care. About two-thirds of physicians said increased federal control over health care would decrease their ability to provide high quality care to patients.”  (Source, Senators Tom Coburn, M.D. and John Barrasso, M.D., “Bad Medicine: A Check-Up on the New Federal Health Law,” http://coburn.senate.gov/public//index.cfm?a=Files.Serve&File_id=722faf8b-a5be-40fd-a52b-9a98826c1592, July 2010)

And the health care takeover bill cut five hundred billion dollars from Medicare. The Health Care Bill Will Cut Over $500 Billion from Medicare Over the Next Decade. “And it would slice an additional $60 billion from Medicare, with the privately run program known as Medicare Advantage targeted for particularly deep cuts, bringing the total reduction in projected spending on the program to more than $500 billion over the next decade.” (Source, Lori Montgomery and Paul Kane, “House leaders announce $940 billion health-care compromise bill,” The Washington Post, March 19, 2010)
