Feingold’s Deficit Spending

Posted August 19, 2010

[Oshkosh, WI]  Senator Feingold has been working overtime trying to convince voters that he has been a fiscal conservative in Washington, but his voting record tells a different story.  Senator Feingold told the Racine Journal Times recently in an editorial board meeting “I voted against these deficit policies. I voted against financial recklessness policies.”

A look at Senator Feingold’s record shows that he has been a consistent supporter of the Democrats’ wasteful spending bills and cast votes on these high-cost reckless pieces of legislation with little regard for the long lasting effect on our nation’s debt.

“Senator Feingold’s claim that he has fought against financial recklessness policies is laughable,” Ron Johnson for Senate campaign spokeswoman Sara Sendek said.   “Senator Feingold has been a consistent supporter of the Obama-Pelosi spending policies rammed through Congress.  It is dishonest to come back to Wisconsin claiming to be anything but your run-of-the-mill tax and spend liberal.  Wisconsin voters can see through this new found fiscal responsibility act Feingold is trying to put on and are ready for a leader that will stop the spending in Washington once and for all.”

Senator Feingold’s Spending Record

In 1992, Russ Feingold Stated the Deficit was His “Highest Priority.” ‘Reducing the deficit is the best way for the federal government to help the economy.  The Washington insiders are avoiding the real question, which is how do we get the federal government to take a long-term role in increasing the real incomes of American families?”

“The first part of that answer is to make annual deficit reduction our top priority.”

Russell Feingold, “Op-Ed,” Wisconsin State Journal, January 27, 1992.

In January of this year, Feingold Voted Against a Plan to Reduce the Deficit. (S. Amdt. 3808 to S. Amdt. 3299 to H.J. Res. 45, 2010 Roll Call #11, “To Reduce the Deficit by Establishing 5-year Discretionary Spending Caps,” Amendment Rejected 56-44, January 28, 2010, Feingold Voted Nay.)

Feingold Said President Barack Obama Was Doing a Better Job on the Deficit. “It would be impossible not to do a better job than the Bush Administration on the deficit.” (“Burning Questions: Senator Feingold Discusses Spending, Jobs, and More,” Appleton [WI] Post-Crescent, June 3, 2010)

This Year’s Deficit is Estimated to Reach $1.3 trillion. (Congressional Budget Office, “The Budget and Economic Outlook: An Update,” August 19, 2010)

According to the Congressional Budget Office, ObamaCare Will Add $1.4 Trillion to the National Debt Over 10 Years. (Congressional Budget Office, “Letter to the Honorable Paul Ryan,” March 19, 2010)

Feingold Defended Everything the Obama Administration Has Done. “I’m pleased to stand with this president anytime and anywhere and defend what we’ve done and what we’re doing.” (Michael O’Brien, “Dem. Sen. Feingold: No Hesitation about Appearing with Obama,” The Hill’s Blog: Briefing Room, August 16, 2010)
