I have read the Patriot Act and ask that you keep on supporting it. I represented the Republican Party of Wisconsin in a forum on the Act way back in 2003. Your Republican opponent is wrong when he says the Act did nothing to stop terorism. I have read articles by the author of the Act citing numerous cases where the Act was responsible for stopping terrorists.
I can provide you with highlights of the Act, which has been much maligned by the lunatic right and by the left–particularly the show Law and Order, which always portrays the Act falsely.
1. The Act was a revision of the FISA Act –Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
2. There were no new powers of surveillance in the Act in that powers that existed for the surveillance of drug king pins and organized crime members were now allowed for communications between or with foreign terrorists. The big examples here are “sneak and peek warrants’ (imagine having to tell the suspected terrorist that he is being tapped–how effective would that be to catch terrorists?), and roving wiretaps (this gave the power to tap by name rather than by phone number, since new technology of the disposable cell phone made it difficult and time wasting to obtain new warrants each time he changed cell phones)
3. There was only one new criminal offense created by the Act–money laundering.
4. The Act does not give arrest powers beside the one above to federal agents–it is a surveillance act–and it doesn’t give any powers to state and local law enforcement as is often claimed in Law and Order. It doesn’t give the power to round up a suspect and interrogate him–that exists elsewhere in federal law.
5. Warrantless searches were not created by the Act, they existed before the Act and were expanded by Bush separate from the Act. All the surveillance powers in the Act required a warrant. Like all federal warrants, the power already existed to act without a warrant. The FISA law already allowed the use of National Security Letters that could be used to surveille without a warrant. Previous law allowed warrantless wiretaps.
6. There is maybe one or two reports of the Act being improperly used agaisnt a US citizen. All laws can be abused by bad law enforcement personnel. But this Act provided for financial aid and a complaint mechanism for people who claim to have been surveilled wrongly.
7. The Act wasn’t designed to give fedral agents power to examine everybody’s library records to go on a witch hunt for terrorists. There must be some prbable cause for a warrant for a named individual’s library records as there must be probable cause for all warrants obtained under the Act. Warrants, you know, require approval by a judge.
Sincerely,

just to comment on your stance on unemployment benefits. i am a husband and father of three unemployed and i put in atleast two applications for employment daily. over one hundred so far. mostly online, which is the way applying has turned this day and age which i dont like mainly because i think it takes away from putting my resume in front of someones eyes instead of hiding it in a hard drive. but anyway my benefits ranout after 26 weeks ,and now i have none. you say that this is a good thing but you need to open your eyes and see that i will be forced into welfare and foodstamps and any other government sponcered programs i can to support my family. this will just further cripple the economy and when im not working im not paying taxes to the state because im not earning any income. long run it just better to extend ui insurance a little longer to alow me to find a good job for me and my family.
I welcome your candidacy and I intend to fight against Russ Feingold. I made some signs: FIRE FEINGOLD – Democraic Doggy; or FIRE FEINGOLD – Liberal Loyalist. I feel Russ as betrayed our trust supporting the Obama agenda.
Mr. Campaign Mgr.,
I downloaded the Nominating Petition several weeks ago and want to know when is the deadline that I have to send it back and where should it be sent?
Looking for your position on restoring the 55 Mile Per Hour speed limit nation wide to reduce our oil dependency.
